Motivation for Single Axis Solar Trackers Versus Fixed Tilt

Silicon Ranch Corporation’s president and CEO, Matt Kisber, recently authored an article for PV Tech, focusing on the solar industry’s motivation to utilize single-axis tracking systems over fixed tilt systems.

Kisber explains why the single axis solar trackers technology’s use is increasing, while also examining the benefits of opting for single axis tracking systems. While the cost of PV modules has greatly decreased during the past five years, both single and dual axis trackers were previously installed in PV sites. However, due to disadvantages regarding reliability, bankability, and ease of installation, most utility-scale tracker systems have now moved to single axis trackers.

Within the article, Kisber explains the single axis tracker architectures and site layout trends. He also notes that optimizing plant layouts and the DC/AC capacity ratios is one of the best opportunities for solar EPC’s to bring additional value to customers. Finally, Kisber addresses operation and maintenance concerns, as well as installation efficiencies for solar modules.

Kisber concluded by affirming that tracking systems are in continuous development to reduce costs and enhance reliability. As systems become more competitive in additional locations, they will continue to gain traction globally.
