Fort Lupton Solar Field is First of Three

A $25 million solar farm in Fort Lupton is the first of three being built in the region.

Officials held a grand opening ceremony Monday, Sept. 26, for the 13-megawatt solar farm, which is the largest incorporated solar field in Colorado. The solar panels are a joint partnership between Nashville, Tennessee-based Silicon Ranch Corp. and United Power Inc. to generate 34.2 million kilowatts annually, producing enough energy for 2,500 homes.

Silicon Ranch has several other projects underway in Weld County, including a 16-megawatt solar field near completion in Mead and a 6-megawatt complex slated to open in 2017 near Johnstown, said Matt Kisber, president, chief executive and co-founder of the company.

Consumers continue to use more energy, and there’s room to grow, Kisber said.

“The energy needs of the United States are so great, there’s not one technology that’s going to fill that insatiable demand,” Kisber said. “I’m a strong believer that it takes all different types of technologies to provide the energy that we need to keep the economy going.”
